Assessor
The Town of Candor participates in a shared program with the Town of Tioga for the office of Town Assessor. Time and costs are divided based on the ratio of parcels in the two towns. The towns have had this program since 1995 when first offered by the state. Our program was one of the first in New York State and was used as an example to other towns that chose to participate in this program offered by the state.
There are multiple tax exemptions available to those who qualify. Among those are the Star exemption for school taxes. The Star exemption has two classifications, basic and enhanced. Everyone is eligible for one of the Star exemption options if they own and reside in their home. An individual who owns their own mobile home, even if it is in a mobile home park is eligible for a Star Tax Exemption. Some of the more common exemptions are Agricultural, Pastoral, Church, Aged, Business, Municipal, School, Fire Company, Veterans, Medical Facilities, and Government Buildings. Call the assessor with any questions that you have about your eligibility of a specific exemption.
In depth assessment and tax map information can be found at the County website. Once you are on the primary web site click on Departments, then Administration and choose Real Property & Taxation Services. Another good reference place is www.orps.state.ny.us. Both the State and County sites have much information that isn't replicated on this site.
One function that the Assessor has that many people may not know is reporting of dog damage to market animals. If you have market animals such as chickens, fallow deer, goats, etc. that are harmed or killed by dogs, you need to call the Town Assessor. The Assessor will do an investigation of the damage done and a verification of the fact that the harm was done by dogs. A dog damage report is done and filed in the appropriate offices. There may be some compensation to the owner of the injured animal.
